we heard a lot of yelling, sound like maybe a fight or something. >> several streets are closed in an apartment building surrounded by police and s.w.a.t. teams trying to get a barricaded gunman to surrender.

a memorial in connecticut. how some adults tried to stop the elementary school carnage. how others sacrificed their lives. good evening i'm ann notarangelo. a developing story out of san francisco. police have surrounded an apartment building. police say a gunman is barricaded in an apartment. cbs 5 reporter is there. >> reporter: as you can see behind me this whole block is filled with police vehicles, emergency vehicles of just about every type. they've been here all evening. now let's take a look at video. this happened about 6:30 with what police say may have been a domestic disturbance. they di rived on the scene. there was some talk of a

weapon. this escalated. so he said there had been some connection. they had some idea there was a weapon. going on that information they brought in the s.w.a.t. team. they brought other people in. >> a neighbor overheard some type of domestic dispute occurring with his next door neighbor. he attempted to make contact with the neighbor. the neighbor made some credible threats that he may potentially have a weapon. the neighbor called san francisco police department, advised us of the situation. at which point our officers respond. they attempted to make contact during this time they believe that this person may potentially have a weapon. >> >> reporter: there are a lot of apartments here, a lot of folks living there. police got all of the people out of the immediate area of danger out of their apartments. others were asked to shelter in

place. we talked with one of those people. his name is nathan. >> we kind of wanted to know what was going on. saw the police cars try to leave our apartment. there were a whole bunch of s.w.a.t. team in the hallway told us to shell nor place. and then evacwaited us about 5 minutes ago. >> reporter: we know there are hostage negotiators. there's also a s.w.a.t. team here. we know that police are not going to give up at any point soon. one of these two is going to prevail. let's hope it's the negotiators. >> we'll check in with you again. there is new information about what happened in the second deadliest school shooting in u.s. history. police say the gunman shot 20 children at least twice with a high powered rifle. he also killed six adults who tried to stop the carnage. investigators say he forced his way into the school by breaking a window. tomorrow president obama will be in newtown, connecticut for

a memorial service. cbs reporter is there where the small community is trying to cope as police work to find a motive. >> reporter: 6-year-old emilie parker was one of the 20 students shot and killed inside sandy hook elementary. >> she was the type of person who could light up a room. >> reporter: her father says his oldest daughter was kind to everyone. >> she is an incredible person. and i'm so blessed to be her dad. >> reporter: investigators identified the shooter as 20- year-old adam lanza. sources say he attended sandy hook elementary as a child. police say when he returned pride morning he used a rifle to shoot 12 girls, 8 boys and 6 adults multiple times. 27-year-old teacher vicki soto died shielding her students. >> she passed doing something she loved. >> reporter: small memorials

like these on barricades block the roadway to the school are popping up all over newtown. people here are grieving and trying to show support any way they can. >> they're just babies, you know. they're just babies. they shouldn't be taken away from their mothers and their fathers. >> reporter: investigators say lanza also killed his mother nancy before taking the gun she kept in the home they shared. police are still gathering evidence. >> did produce a very good evidence in this evidence in this investigation. >> reporter: lanza's father said in a statement his family is heart broken and struggling to make sense of what happened. >> here is more of what adam lanza's father said in the statement. quote, our family is grieving along with all of those who veteran affected. he also said that relatives are quote, in a state of disbelief and trying to find whatever answers we can.

as new details of the massacre emerge the horror surrounding what happened grows. after shooting his mother the shooter sprayed two classrooms with semiautomatic assault rifles. bob orr on how it went down. >> reporter: it was a massacre and most of the victims were first graders. autopsies on the bodies of the children revealed that many, if not all, had been shot multiple times. wayne carver is the chief medical examiner for connecticut. >> i only did seven of the autopsies. the victims i had ranged from 3 to 11 wounds a piece and i only saw two of them with close range shooting. >> reporter: investigators believe most of the bullets came from a bushmaster .223 assault rifle. it was one of four guns adam lanza took from the home he shared with his mother. sources say he left one gun in his car and forced his way into

the school carrying the assault rifle in his hands and two semiautomatic pistols in the cargo pants he was wearing. inside the school he zeroed in on two classrooms killing 20 children and 6 adults. one of them was the school's principal who tried to stop the shooting. the spree ended when lanza shot himself with one of the handguns. police have yet to find any journal or detailed notes lanza may have left behind explaining his horrific actions. but lieutenant paul vance said clues have been recovered. >> did produce some very good evidence in this investigation that our investigators will be able to use and hopefully painting the complete picture as to how and more importantly why this occurred. >> investigators are still trying to determine a motive. police are checking out report that the killer adam lanza had recently been involved in an argument with staffers at the

school, but that has not been confirmed. tonight we're hearing more about extraordinary heroism displayed by teachers at sandy hook elementary. some of them in the last moments of their lives. michelle miller has their story. >> reporter: the news that the six 7-year-olds had been shot multiple times devastated a community. >> just babies. they're just babies. they shouldn't be taken away from their mothers and their fathers. >> reporter: the children who survived were protected by their teachers. janet gathered her kindergartners in one corner. >> they sounded like gunshots. >> reporter: 18 years of teaching experience kicked in. >> we all got away from the windows. pulled down the blinds. covered the windows. locked the classroom door. it the children started to say

i'm scared. i said we're going to be okay. i think maybe somebody is up on the roof making noises and again trying to divert their attention. >> reporter: finally police told them it was safe to leave. >> they said have everybody hold hands. come down the hallway. cover their eyes. so we did. as i'm going by the hallway, i saw blood on the floor. so i know that things aren't good. i don't know whether any of them saw that. we kept going, kept moving. >> reporter: vicki soto also taught kindergarten. >> vicki was a vibrant young girl. she just turned 27 years old. she loved the beach. she has a black lab named roxie. >> reporter: her father said she gathered her students into a class close et. shep was killed standing in

front protecting them. >> the family has peace and pride knowing that she did something that she loved. whatever details transpired, we know in our hearts that she was protecting those kids from that shooter. >> another teacher who survived managed to save herself and her students by taking them into a bathroom adjoining their classroom. she pulled a bookshelf in front of the door. more than a dozen vigils to mourn for the victims of the connecticut school massacre. the vigil was one of several suggested by a move on.org to call for an end to gun violence. there were similar gathering in other communities. >> i like to believe because it's very innocent, very young children this will really cut through a lot of the mess in dc. i'm a brand new mom. i have a 7-week-old who i

brought out. my heart is breaking right now. so when the president cried, you know, there were parents crying with him. i like to think this can be a real moment for us. >> the bay area vigils are a response to the school shooting to push for gun control. in a moment gun violence and gun buy backs today will have the latest on the rain moving through our area. but first the names of the women and children who lost their lives yesterday in newtown, connecticut.

ay. the a 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a bomb threat that shut down a high school on thursday. the school canceled classes after police found graffiti referencing the threat. sheriffs deputies found no explosive devices. the name of the teen isn't being released. police have arrest add man who fired 50 shots in the parking lot of a southern

california shopping mall. no one was hurt but the gunman forced a lockdown of stores and caused alarm. this afternoon's shooting comes days after a deadly mall shooting in oregon and just one day, of course, after the elementary school shooting in connecticut. preventing that type of violence, that's why gun owners turn in their weapons. the large turnover in oakland was partly a result of the connecticut tragedy. >> it only takes one gun and one bullet to kill somebody. >> reporter: the turnout for this gun buy back was unprecedented. people started lining up four hours before it began. the line stretching for blocks in east oakland. everyone came to exchange their firearms, $200 cash for each working gun. >> some guns off the streets,

our grand kids or someone can't get these guns. >> reporter: more than 100 people have been killed in oakland so far this year. gunfire hit four people a few blocks away at international and 85th in broad daylight 7:30 a.m. while this happens all too often in oakland, it's the connecticut school massacre that's on a lot of people's minds today. >> it puts the gun violence in a different perspective. >> now they understand at much more profound level that having a gun in your home that is not safely kept could be a gun in the street committing a crime. >> reporter: oakland police say the most dangerous times of year, right before christmas and in august. they're planning another gun buy back next summer. >> right here at the bottom. see right there? >> reporter: the difference between this program and most others, you get cash instead of a gift card. they only accept working guns. the money is given by a wealthy

oakland donor. police admit it's not the gang members showing up, but it's the people who may unwillingly provide the guns to criminals. >> the same citizens who are victims of burglaries. these guns are taken into homes and put in the hands of individuals who are taking people's lives. >> also a long line in san francisco today. police worked with community groups to get the word out about the program. so many people respond in san francisco that they ran out of money and they had to give out iou's. one woman said the connecticut massacre prompted her to turn in her father's guns. secretary of state hillary clinton is recovering at home after fainting. she also suffered a concussion. clinton canceled an overseas trip last week because she was ill with a stomach virus. the state department says she was dehydrated and fainted.
